Audience theory 1: blog tasks

Audience theory 1: blog tasks   Hypodermic needle model The Mail Online has written an article about the effects that violent video games have on audiences. This article suggests that playing violent video games 20 minutes a day can encourage violent tendencies for their audiences. This relates to the hypodermic needle theory. This article is suggesting that audiences of this game are passive and will intake the media that they are given and will implement it into their personal lives without questioning it.             Similarly to the Mail Online article, this article is suggesting that the audiences of video games, in this case, a 15-year-old boy, are blindly accepting media and are allowing it to influence their lives.  I agree with the hypodermic needle theory to a certain extent. With the world that we are living in now, audiences are quick to question certain things that they see in the media. However, a small percentage of audiences d...

Psychographics: pair presentations

Psychographics: pair presentations Structure   I was working with Nadima for this presentation. We were researching on the phychographic group, 'Explorer'.  Introduce of the example couple that represents 'Explorers': Their made up names:  Nadima and I decided to name the couple Lucy and Meg, it was a little bit difficult to think of a name that matched an 'Explorer' phsychographic.  Where they work/study: We suggested that our couple studied geography and took an interest in archaeology.  What they do in their spare time: For our couple, we stated that they took part in activities such as; sky diving, rock climbing, Hiking and skiing.  Their media consumption: Print:  We decided that our couple typically read the news paper 'The I'  and probably Teen Vogue. However, they will consume these media products online rather than on print.  Broadcast:  We agreed that our couple probably enjoyed watching Superhero movies (Marvel/DC...

MIGRAIN: October assessment - learner response

MIGRAIN: October assessment - learner r esponse Response from Mr Halsey WWW: You start very strongly with excellent analysis in Q1+2. The challenge now is maintaining that depth of analysis across the whole paper. EBI: Revise theory! You could have offered a range of narrativve theories in Q1 beyond Todorov (Barthers, Propp, Levi-strauss) Genre theory is lacking in Q3. Revise Neale, Chandler, Abercrombie. In Q4, you needed more depth and detail, particularly for the prefferred reading. See mark scheme for more.  Comparing my work to the  mark scheme for this assessment   Q1: For question 1, to get the top marks, I would've needed to use consistent highly appropriate subject specific terminology throughout. Q2: For question 2, I would've had to display a e xcellent knowledge and understanding of the influences of the social  and cultural contexts on the film posters that is consistently supported by highly appropriate and effective reference to t...

Narrative: blog task

Narrative: Blog Task Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium is seen in a variety of movies and programmes. An example of this is in Jumanji (2017). The equilibrium would be the ordinary life of 4 teens, the disequilibrium would be when they are sucked into the game, the new equilibrium would be when they have to complete tasks to exit the game.  Analysis Task: In this clip from Game of Thrones, narrative markers are used to help establish setting, character and plot to the audience. The geographical marker suggests that this scene is set in a tropical country, quite similar to ones in the middle east, that typically has a hot climate. This is portrayed through the sandy earth surrounding them. The dialect acts as a historical/temporal marker. The audience would not be familiar with this language as it is not a language spoken within any culture of this century, this could suggest to the audience that this was set within a different era (wel...

Genre: blog tasks

Genre: blog tasks The author addresses the importance of visual iconographies. They state that codes and conventions, most commonly, are considered as coming from the iconographies. They continue to say that visual iconographies are enough to act alone however they can also work together to indicate the genre.  The importance of narrative has been discussed in the article. The author states that narrative, apart from visual and aural codes, can be a way of identifying genre. Some genres have particular types of storylines. However, different genres might have the same plot but they will have a different narrative, this is what makes the two genres distinguishable. In an action movie, there is typically one 'heroic' person, a lone wolf. Whereas disaster movies feature a group of heroic people that all have different characteristics and/or one distinct strength. Different ways that films can be categorised according to Bordwell: Period or Country (US films of the 1930s) Director ...
