MIGRAIN: October assessment - learner response
Response from Mr Halsey
WWW:
- You start very strongly with excellent analysis in Q1+2. The challenge now is maintaining that depth of analysis across the whole paper.
EBI:
- Revise theory! You could have offered a range of narrativve theories in Q1 beyond Todorov (Barthers, Propp, Levi-strauss)
- Genre theory is lacking in Q3. Revise Neale, Chandler, Abercrombie.
- In Q4, you needed more depth and detail, particularly for the prefferred reading. See mark scheme for more.

In question 3, to get full mark, i would have needed to made reference to media theorists and link it to the question. I didnt mention a theorist and therefore lost out on marks.
Re-writing my weakest answer in full
Genre is an important aspect for both producers and audiences as they both benefit from it. However, the benefit is received in different ways.
Producers benefit from generating media products from certain genres. Producers will accumulate a large amount of profit from fans of said genre. This is supported by the theory from Abercrombie; "Media producers set out to exploit genre conventions, it makes sound economic sense.". Producers utilising the key conventions of the genre boosts the abundance of success that the media product will have as marketability to specific audiences will have increased. Neale's theory of repetition and difference also supports the idea that producers use genre and the conventions of that genre to benefit from it.
Genre is noticeably important for consumers also benefit from the concept of genre. Revisiting Abercrombie's theory, it is evident that genre gives audiences the power to decide whether a media product that they are consuming is something that would interest them or not. That is because audiences will become familiar with viewing certain conventions of a genre and as a result of this, audiences will feel enticed to devote time to engaging with the media product, whether it is film or television.
