MIGRAIN: October assessment - learner response

Response from Mr Halsey

WWW:

  • You start very strongly with excellent analysis in Q1+2. The challenge now is maintaining that depth of analysis across the whole paper.

EBI:

  • Revise theory! You could have offered a range of narrativve theories in Q1 beyond Todorov (Barthers, Propp, Levi-strauss)
  • Genre theory is lacking in Q3. Revise Neale, Chandler, Abercrombie.
  • In Q4, you needed more depth and detail, particularly for the prefferred reading. See mark scheme for more.

Comparing my work to the mark scheme for this assessment

Q1: For question 1, to get the top marks, I would've needed to use consistent highly appropriate subject specific terminology throughout.

Q2: For question 2, I would've had to display a excellent knowledge and understanding of the influences of the social and cultural contexts on the film posters that is consistently supported by
highly appropriate and effective reference to the set products.

Q3: For question 3, i would have to exhibit excellent knowledge and understanding of the influences of genre on media audiences and industries that is consistently supported by highly appropriate and effective examples.

Q4: For question 4, to get full marks, my judgements and conclusions regarding the application of reception theory would have had to be perceptive and fully supported with detailed reference to specific aspects of the set product.

Comparing my work to an exemplar response from a previous Year 12 (an A grade).

Q1: In the exemplar response, the student refers to Todorov along with another theorist. They make a detailed analysis on the product applying both Todorov and Bathes theories to it.

Q2: In question 2, the student makes reference to the race of both of the males in the produces anf discusses the typical stereotypes and conventions that have been placed on them in society.

Q3: In this question, the student makes reference to Abercrombie and uses his theory to apply it to the question and give a detailed argument.

Q4: Within question 4, the student makes links to mise-en-scene to develeop their point on the hegemonic reading of the text. The go on to mention how his jewlery portrays Miguel as affluent and successful.

In question 3, to get full mark, i would have needed to made reference to media theorists and link it to the question. I didnt mention a theorist and therefore lost out on marks.

Re-writing my weakest answer in full

Genre is an important aspect for both producers and audiences as they both benefit from it. However, the benefit is received in different ways.

Producers benefit from generating media products from certain genres. Producers will accumulate a large amount of profit from fans of said genre. This is supported by the theory from Abercrombie; "Media producers set out to exploit genre conventions, it makes sound economic sense.". Producers utilising the key conventions of the genre boosts the abundance of success that the media product will have as marketability to specific audiences will have increased. Neale's theory of repetition and difference also supports the idea that producers use genre and the conventions of that genre to benefit from it.

Genre is noticeably important for consumers also benefit from the concept of genre. Revisiting Abercrombie's theory, it is evident that genre gives audiences the power to decide whether a media product that they are consuming is something that would interest them or not. That is because audiences will become familiar with viewing certain conventions of a genre and as a result of this, audiences will feel enticed to devote time to engaging with the media product, whether it is film or television.

Advertising: Score Hair Cream advert and wider reading

Blog task: Score advert and wider reading Media Factsheet - Score hair cream  Advertising techniques changed greatly in the 1960s. Instead of relying on market research, advertising agencies focused more on the creative aspects of advertising. Humour, irony and dramatic visuals were a few new and innovative techniques that agencies incorporated in their advertising, as they believed it would 'win audiences over'. Advertising in the 1960s took on a more realistic look.  This change in advertising techniques is seen in the Score Hair Cream advert as it includes real people, minimal illustrations and dramatic visuals that would appeal to the audience.  In post-war British advertising campaigns, representations of women enforce the idea that a woman's place is to be at home; completing house duties. Setting -  in an exotic jungle which evokes Britains colonial past. Costume -  Safari wear, worn by all characters to emphasise the location that the advertise se...

My Media Consumption.

My media consumption. Newspapers I do not read newspapers regularly. When I do, I turn to the pages that are featured n the front cover. I usually do not read sections that include the UK government. I usually read stories about crime or tragedies, I find it very interesting and I get engaged in the stories. The newspapers I read are usually free ones that you can pick up. I do not look for online versions of newspapers online.  Magazines I do not buy magazines regularly. The last time I bought a magazine for myself was over 2 years ago. However, I have read magazines that my mum has brought home. When I would read them, I would read the celebrity section or news section. I don't usually avoid sections.  Television I do not watch television often but if I do, I would only spend 10.5 hours a week and 1.5 hours a day watching it This is because the only time I watch it is at dinner time with the family; which is usually around 5;30/6 pm. I rarely watch TV alone. The best program...

Magazine practical production: tasks

Magazine practical production: tasks Research The main branding logo is written in a san serif font to make it seem as if it is almost hand written. However, the cover lines are written in a serif font to portray the magazine as more sophisticated. In Allure magazines, the brand logo colour typically matches the models clothing or the background and i will incorporate that in my final piece  Planning 1) On a Word or Google document, plan your  main cover line  (also called the 'main flash') - this is the main cover story that links to your central image.
