Blog tasks: ideology

Blog tasks: ideology

Binary opposition is suggested between the two conflicting ideologies regarding immigration. Nigel Farage and Russel Brand have two juxtaposing mindsets when it comes to immigration. Nigel Farage argues the fact that the UK is becoming overpopulated due to immigration and he states that immigrants are taking over people’s jobs and homes. Whereas Russel Brand states that the government is at fault as they are not successful in collecting taxes from the rich. Another way that binary opposition is suggested is in the way that they present themselves. Nigel dresses more formally, in a suit and tie. Whereas Russell is seen in a more relaxed and comfortable attire

Left-wing and right-wing ideologies are presented in this clip. In some cases, the point from either side is valid. However, Nigel's points seem to be made not because of his concerns for the county but mainly from his slight hatred for people from ethnic backgrounds and his conservative life.

Media Magazine Reading

This article is an analysis of the dystopian representation of capitalist society in the latest Hunger Games and how Marxists ideologies have been applied.

In The Hunger Games, the capitalist views presented are that those in power control ideas and manipulate the less powerful so that their way of life is seen as natural even if it may be extremely flawed or detrimental to the people of that society.

The Hunger Games suggest the power of media subconsciously Influences our beliefs and ideas. Similar to the movie, the 'elite' used different forms of media to manipulate the people of Panem.

The article suggests that ideologies are mainly a social construct rather than natural thought as we are controlled and manipulated by the media and how much of it we consume.

Four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies:

 - Money brings happiness
 - There is a sense of fulfilment in consumer goods
 - Family brings happiness
 - Work holds fulfilment

Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggests that the dominant classes have the ability to project its own beliefs onto the less powerful. These bel.iefs are then passively accepted by the ones without authority

Louis Althusser suggests that ideology and consumerism are presented as a controlling factor that dominates our day to day actions. We are manipulated through two different forms of control: the repressive state control and the ideological state apparatus.

Advertising: Score Hair Cream advert and wider reading

Blog task: Score advert and wider reading Media Factsheet - Score hair cream  Advertising techniques changed greatly in the 1960s. Instead of relying on market research, advertising agencies focused more on the creative aspects of advertising. Humour, irony and dramatic visuals were a few new and innovative techniques that agencies incorporated in their advertising, as they believed it would 'win audiences over'. Advertising in the 1960s took on a more realistic look.  This change in advertising techniques is seen in the Score Hair Cream advert as it includes real people, minimal illustrations and dramatic visuals that would appeal to the audience.  In post-war British advertising campaigns, representations of women enforce the idea that a woman's place is to be at home; completing house duties. Setting -  in an exotic jungle which evokes Britains colonial past. Costume -  Safari wear, worn by all characters to emphasise the location that the advertise se...

Narrative in advertising: blog task

Narrative in advertising: blog task Nike has received critical acclaim for its February 2018 advert ‘Nothing beats a Londoner’. Embed the advert in your blog and answer the following questions:   If we apply narrative theories to this advert, we can see that many theories are used throughout. One example of a narrative theory seen in this commercial is Propp's character theory. The Nike products shown in this advert acts as the helper; each character in this advert has a problem to solve, the use of Nike products helps them persevere and get through the issue. Another narrative theory that could be applied to this advert is Todorov's equilibrium theory. Towards the end of the advert, a boy is seen as weak and feeble compared to his peers, they look down at him in shame; he then grows large and towers the people that once used to tower him.  In the advert, we see many celebrities in the background shots and as secondary characters in the story line. Celebrities such as D...
