Oh Comely - Audience blog tasks
Oh Comely was started by three friends at Oxford University around eight years ago. They wanted to create something opposite to the women's magazines seen on the market.
Oh Comely has a print circulation of around 10,000 copies
The editor Alice Snape characterises the typical Oh Comely reader as being 18-35 year old that is creative and intelligent individuals that are inspired by other women. She also states that Oh Comely readers are educated and politically aware.
The editor characterises the magazine's aesthetic as clean and minimal. This allows the words and artwork to shine. The editor also adds that they use natural portraits, with no Photoshop or editing, to accompany interviews. This gives consumers the audience pleasure of personal identity. Seeing high-status people in their natural state, with no airbrushing, will allow audiences to relate to them more.
Nearly all of the team is women. Apart from the freelancers that they work with, who are men and women, the remaining of the team is women. Oh Comely believes that a magazine for women should be made by women.
Oh Comely introduces itself by stating how it is majorly different from typical magazines and has a different approach to aesthetic and how they cater to their loyal fans.
Oh Comely: Men's Health:

Oh Comely is distributed to the audience through independents, WHSmith and international outlets.
The target audience demographic is women both young and mature. The average age is 27. In terms of class, the target audience would most likely be ABC1.
In terms of psychographics, I believe that Oh Comely readers would tend to be explorers and reformers. Explorers tend to value individualism and experience and reformers believe in freedom for growth and lack of restrictions. Both of these examples would most likely describe an Oh Comely reader.
Oh Comely readers would typically be in ABC1, in terms of social class. This is because Oh Comely is a pricey magazine and readers would have to have a reasonable amount of disposable income to purchase one. I also believe that Oh Comely consumers would possess a high level of education as the contents of the magazine engage in discussions about topics that are not commonly seen in other mainstream magazines.
Oh Comely offers consumers with the audience pleasures personal identity and information & surveillance. Female audiences will be able to relate to the topics that are being addressed in the magazine and they also get informed about certain things they may not have full knowledge on.
It has been suggested Oh Comely is a “magazine about people, their quirks and creativity rather than money and what it can buy”. I agree with this statement as it is evident that Oh Comely prioritises the aesthetic of the magazine and the art featured. They also maintain a magazine that is ideal for their readers.
Oh Comely has been able to build a loyal audience of subscribers in the years since it launched. This is because Oh Comely successfully challenges the typical print magazines. Their magazines are innovative and contemporary and are not often seen on the market. Oh Comely consumers are probably aware of this and they chose to stay loyal.
